An Elegant Chattanooga Wedding at The Read House

filed in:

Julia and Nathan’s Chattanooga wedding brought together historic architecture and a beautifully romantic atmosphere. Their day began with getting ready at The Read House, followed by a ceremony at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. They later returned to the historic hotel for a stunning reception that perfectly complemented its moody, timeless character.

Between the ceremony’s strict photography restrictions, unexpected rain, and last-minute reception adjustments, this wedding kept us on our toes. But that’s part of what I love about photographing weddings. Things don’t always go exactly as planned. Knowing how to adapt without taking away from the experience makes all the difference.

From the thoughtful details to the moments throughout the day, here’s a closer look at Julia and Nathan’s wedding at The Read House in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Details & Getting Ready at The Read House

Julia and Nathan started their wedding day getting ready at The Read House. I genuinely can’t think of a more fitting backdrop for their day. From the moment you walk into the lobby, you’re surrounded by rich wood paneling and gorgeous chandeliers. There’s so much history and character throughout this Chattanooga hotel, even in the guest rooms. I especially love that for those quieter getting-ready moments.

Between Julia’s beautiful bridal details, the handwritten notes and gifts they exchanged, and those final moments with family before the ceremony, there was so much worth documenting. I’ve always believed that where you choose to get ready matters just as much as where you celebrate. When the space is this beautiful, even the simplest moments become part of the visual story of your wedding day.

Final Wedding Preparations at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

After getting ready at The Read House, Julia and Nathan headed to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga for their final preparations. And the getting-ready spaces here were pretty beautiful, too! Between the vintage furnishings, warm interiors, and natural light, there were plenty of opportunities for portraits before the ceremony. Nathan finished getting into his classic black tux while Julia slipped into her off-the-shoulder satin gown, with a little help from the people closest to her.

Before walking down the aisle, Julia shared a first look with her father in the church’s garden courtyard. The brick archways and surrounding greenery made it such a beautiful spot for a moment between the two of them. His smile when he turned around said it all, and Julia couldn’t help but wipe away a few tears. These are the genuine reactions I love getting to document.

A Romantic Wedding Ceremony & Portraits at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chattanooga

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is absolutely stunning. I loved the soaring dark wood ceilings and intricate brickwork to the stained glass windows and ornate altar. It’s the kind of space that doesn’t need much added to it, and it was a beautiful setting for Julia and Nathan’s ceremony.

I’ll admit, this was one of the more challenging ceremonies I’ve photographed. The church doesn’t allow flash photography or photography from the main level during the ceremony, which meant working entirely with the existing light and shooting from a distance. Restrictions like these require you to think differently, adapt quickly, and know your equipment inside and out. Despite the limitations, I was able to capture the ceremony in a way that preserved both the beautiful architecture and the moments happening between Julia and Nathan.

After the ceremony, we took advantage of the church’s gorgeous interiors for some romantic, moody portraits before heading outside. The brick archways and a classic black car gave us even more variety, with portraits that felt both timeless and editorial.

Portraits & Cocktail Hour at The Read House

After the ceremony, we headed back to The Read House for more portraits while guests enjoyed cocktail hour. We started outside with the classic black car before moving indoors. The hotel’s vintage telephone booths and historic details gave us plenty to work with. The Read House has so much personality that you really don’t have to go far to create something interesting.

And if the architecture wasn’t interesting enough, The Read House has quite a history of its own. Over the years, The Read House has welcomed some pretty recognizable names, including Al Capone, Winston Churchill, and Elvis Presley. Several U.S. presidents have also stayed here. Al Capone’s connection to the hotel is really interesting, with its famous Room 311 associated with his stay. It’s one of those places where the history is just as fascinating as the interiors. And for me, that makes photographing a wedding here even more fun.

Meanwhile, cocktail hour was taking place on the outdoor terrace, with guests mingling over drinks, beautiful white floral arrangements, and live music from Somersault Strings. The open-air setting, string music, and all the little details made it such a beautiful way for guests to enjoy some time together before heading into the reception.

A Romantic Wedding Reception in The Read House’s Silver Ballroom

The Silver Room at The Read House is truly stunning. It has floor-to-ceiling mirrors, ornate Baroque detailing, and chandeliers. It already has so much character, but the reception design took it to another level. With planning by W Events Co. and florals by Divine Floral Studio, the room was filled with towering arrangements of baby’s breath and white orchids, soft candlelight, gold chairs, and beautifully styled tables. Everything felt romantic and thoughtfully put together.

Of course, even the most carefully planned weddings can require a little flexibility. Between the rain and the logistics of plated dinner service, Julia’s original vision for four-tiered place settings had to change when the chef needed the plates for dinner preparation. Rather than lose the look entirely, I worked alongside the planner and florist to restyle the tables with elegant folded napkins and a single orchid at each setting.

And when Julia asked if there was any way to capture her original design, I told her we’d bring the plates back out after dinner and recreate it for photos. We made it happen, and she was ecstatic with the results. It’s moments like these that remind me how much goes into creating and documenting a wedding beyond what’s on the timeline.

Julia and Nathan also had the chance to see the finished room during their reveal, and Julia’s reaction says everything. From there, the night moved into their grand entrance, dinner, and a packed dance floor. Between the dancing, laughter, some fun moments, including their sparkler photos, it was such a fun ending to an incredible Chattanooga wedding.

Planning a Chattanooga or Read House Wedding?

If you’re a lover of historic architecture, dramatic interiors, and a wedding venue with a little personality, The Read House is definitely worth considering. With it’s rich history, beautifully detailed spaces, like the stunning Silver Room, it’s an incredible choice for couples who want a wedding day that feels timeless and upscale.

My approach to wedding photography blends cinematic, editorial imagery with honest, documentary storytelling. I love working with couples who care just as much about the experience of their wedding day as they do about the photographs. The beautiful design matters, of course, but so do the people, the energy, and all the moments you can’t plan for.

I’m based in Atlanta, but my work takes me across the East Coast and beyond, wherever my couples choose to celebrate. Whether you’re planning a wedding in Chattanooga, Atlanta, or somewhere halfway around the world, I’d love to hear what you have in mind.

Inspired by poetry, travel, and the emotion tucked into small gestures, I photograph the way something feels, not just how it looks. My approach is intuitive, artful, and grounded in intention. Documenting wherever your story unfolds, I’ll meet you there.

Hi, I’m April - Atlanta and Las Vegas based creative drawn to the quiet in-between. I document intentional weddings and elopements with a balance of softness and structure, capturing real moments with an editorial eye. To me, imagery is a form of preservation: a way to slow time, to witness love in its rawest, most beautiful form.

Editorial, documentary, intuitive art for the moments you’ll feel

forever.
